Larry Kramer

June 25, 1935 – May 27, 2020

Playwright, Author, Public Health Advocate, and LGBT Rights Activist

Best remembered for his play The Normal Heart and his novel Faggots, Larry Kramer was a tireless—and often strident—advocate for gay visibility and HIV awareness and public action. He co-founded Gay Men’s Health Crisis, the first private organization assisting people living with AIDS, and was instrumental in the founding of ACT-UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power). ACT UP has been widely credited with changing public health policy and the perception of people living with AIDS, and with raising awareness of HIV and AIDS-related diseases.

“Larry Kramer is one of America's most valuable troublemakers. I hope he never lowers his voice.” - Susan Sontag
