Isabel Cabanillas de la Torre, a 26-year-old Mexican woman from Juárez, was passionate about clothing design, painting and social justice. She worked on gender-based violence with the women’s network Mesa de Mujeres. She also had been a member of Hijas de su Maquilera Madre (Daughters of Maquila Worker Mothers), a local women’s rights collective. The group described Cabanillas as a young woman with “a lot of talent, ideas and love to share.” Her murder underscores the decadeslong concerns over disappearances and femicides in Juárez.
